Illinois Prairie is launching a new adult book club on May 1st. The Silent Book Club will meet on the first Thursday of each month from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Eli's Coffee Shop in Metamora. Silent Book Club is a book club for people who want to participate in a social book club setting but don't want to be told what to read. There’s no assigned reading — readers bring whatever book they like (ebooks, audiobooks, graphic novels, even textbooks are welcome) — and spend time reading silently together.
Monthly meetings are free to attend, but we ask that you support our host venue by buying a drink or snack when you can. Bring your book recommendations or books to swap* with other members and share them before you leave. Noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs are recommended if you are sensitive to light conversation (we do not have exclusive use of Eli's).
Each monthly meeting will begin with 20 - 30 minutes of social time, during which members can find a seat, grab a snack or a drink, and visit with others before settling in to read quietly for one hour. At the end of the hour, we will close the meeting with another brief social time, during which readers can share book recommendations or browse books on the community table.
Everyone is welcome at Silent Book Club. Registration is requested, but not required for attendance. If you register in advance, you will get a reminder email. Register for monthly meetings on our Events Calendar.
If you happen to arrive late or need to leave early, we ask that you please respect the silent reading time from 4:30 - 5:30 pm.
* If you have a book you are willing to share with another reader, please bring it and set it on the community table. When you are done reading, feel free to browse the community table for books. If any books you brought have not been claimed by the end of the meeting, please take them with you and bring them again some other time. Do not leave them at Eli's. Please do not trade library books.
